Ted Stevens. The Disgraced Senator from Alaska

October 28, 2008

Article from CNN: Stevens to Alaska voters: ‘Stand with me’

Regardless of Ted Stevens’ culpability in this case, which the jury felt was clear, Stevens took gifts (home renovations) in order of a few hundred thousand dollars and did not claim them – as he should. His best out would have been to claim he overlooked the claim or forgot to issue it. He could of even played dumb and pretended he didn’t know he needed to make a claim – as this would have been his best scenario in a losing argument. Although claiming ignorance is no excuse, especially from a senator of 40 years!

Instead, Stevens is claiming innocence and charging misconduct on the prosecution…

“The senator’s attorneys twice sought to have the charges thrown out during the monthlong trial, accusing prosecutors of hiding evidence favorable to the defense. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan rejected those efforts but faulted prosecutors for “hiding the ball.”"

Look Ted, you are guilty as charged. Get over the fact you are going to lose your senate seat and spend the short remainder of your life chilling in your newly remodeled home. Chances are it will still be in style when you leave us.

My guess is the judge will let you slide with probabtion; but a stipulation should be you retire your senate seat – not sure how likely it is. You would be best served to step down now and disappear into the Alaskan wild. For once on his stump, John McCain is right.
